THE 12th SENIOR OFFICIALS MEETING ON HEALTH DEVELOPMENT (SOMHD) AND OTHER RELATED MEETINGS

The Ministry of Health Brunei Darussalam is chairing and hosting this year's 12th Senior Officials Meeting on Health Development (SOMHD) and Other Related Meetings. The meeting is held over three days, starting today, April 18th until April 20th, 2017 at the Al-'Afiah Hall, Ministry of Health.
A Working Dinner was held on the previous day, April 17th, 2017 at the Rizqun International Hotel, which was attended by the meeting's heads of delegation to discuss and assess the issues that will be highlighted in the 12th SOMHD Meeting.
The 12th SOMHD meeting began with a welcoming speech by the chair of this year's meeting, Dr. Hajah Maslina binti Haji Mohsin, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional), Ministry of Health. In her speech, Dr. Hajah Maslina binti Haji Mohsin share the expectations of the 12th SOMHD Meeting as well as the progress and achievements made by health sectors in ASEAN since Brunei Darussalam became host to SOMHD last year. She also stressed the need for countries involved to continue to cooperate in addressing the common health challenges in the region and ensure that the outcomes of the SOMHD meeting is in line with the ASEAN post-2015 Health Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
This year, the SOMHD meeting is attended by 118 delegates, comprising of senior health officials from ASEAN, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.
SOMHD meetings are held annually and aim to assess the implementation of the mission outlined in the previous SOMHD meeting. It also focuses on implementing activities, commitments and joint statements that is to be highlighted at the ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting (AHMM), which is held once every two years. The SOMHD meeting focuses on discussing the health agendas concerning the ASEAN region and its planned activities towards achieving the objectives of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint which was agreed by the ASEAN leaders.
This year's SOMHD meeting will discuss four main agendas which are: Promoting Healthy Lifestyle; Responding To All Hazards And Emerging Threats; Strengthening Health Systems and Access to Care; and Ensuring Food Safety. These discussions are highly relevant for the country as it is well aligned and strongly support the three strategic priorities of the Ministry of Health: inculcating the message of "health is everyone's business", prevent and control non-communicable diseases, and to deliver excellence through consolidation and realignment of healthcare services in the country.
Brunei Darussalam will play an important role in steering the SOMHD meeting and AHMM meeting this year towards valuable outcomes that improves the health and wellbeing of all in the country and region.
