WORLD AIDS DAY SYMPOSIUM 2018
Sunday, 24 Rabiulawal 1440H | 2 December 2018M - To commemorate World Aids Day 2018, a symposium is held today, 2nd December 2018, at the Main Lecture Theatre, Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah, Institute of Health Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
The event, National HIV Symposium for Health Care Professionals 2018 is a collaboration between the Ministry of Health through the Health Promotion Centre; Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) through the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences; and the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAIDS Council) and its youth wing, Penyinar Club.
Present as the Guest of Honour and also to officiate the launching of BDAIDS Council Website is he Honourable Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health. Also present are Yang Mulia Awang Haji Abdul Manap bin Othman, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health; Deputy Permanent Secretaries of Ministry of Health and senior officials from the Ministry of Health.
The objectives of this symposium are to update healthcare workers with the latest information on HIV prevention, treatment and care in Brunei Darussalam; to reduce stigmatization of People Living With HIV (PLWHIV) within the Bruneian healthcare system; and to network with other stakeholders in HIV and AIDS work in Brunei Darussalam. This symposium is also hoped to better-inform healthcare professionals in Brunei Darussalam on HIV infection in order to be able to effectively manage People Living With HIV (PLWHIV) and at-risk populations when encountering them in the healthcare system.
A keynote lecture 'Best Practice on HIV Programmes in the Region' is presented by Dr Ying-Ru Jacqueline Lo, Head of Mission and WHO Representative to Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore. Several talks are held during the symposium by invited speakers from National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore; Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences, UBD; Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC); and local doctors from the Ministry of Health.
About 300 participants attended the symposium, comprised of doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, medical social workers, medical/bio-medical/pharmacy/nurse students and lecturers.
