What's That Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy is...
...the use of purposeful activity or interventions to promote health and achieve functional outcome. Achieving functional outcomes means develop, improve, restore the highest possible level of independence of any individual who is limited by a physical injury or illness, a dysfunctional condition, a cognitive impertinent, a psychosocial dysfunctional, a mental illness, a developmental or learning disability.

Occupational Therapy Services include:

  1. The assessment, treatment, education and consultation with the individual and individuals family
     

  2. Interventions directed toward developing, improving, restoring daily living skill, work performance, play skill, leisure capacities and enhancing educational performance skill
     

  3.  Providing for the development, improvement, restoration of sensorimotor, oral motor, neuromuscular functioning, emotional, motivational, cognitive, or psychosocial components of performance.

In Brunei Darussalam, Occupational Therapy is either hospital based or community based:

A. Hospital Based

  • Psychiatric

  • Hand therapy

  • Neurosurgical

  • Medical

  • Orthopaedic

  • Oncology

  • Cardiology

When necessary, the therapist will need to carry out a home visit, work site visit or recommended home modification to ensure a save environment for a patient to return to. The therapist also teaches a disable person to drive.

B. Community Based

  • Child Development Centre (CDC) Kiarong.

The therapist visit schools when necessary, and liaise with special education teachers working in the schools to design a programme that is suitable for the children and provide a comfortable environment for them to study.

Referrals for Occupational Therapy
Doctor referrals are required for patients to receive an Occupational Therapist treatment. Both of hospital in and outpatient referrals are accepted. Referrals are also taken from private and government clinic or from overseas hospitals.

Treatment fee
The will be a minimal fee charged per treatment session for green identity card holders.

Staffing and administration
The department is administered by an Administrative Head Cum Senior Occupational Therapist. At present, there are 8 therapist in RIPAS Hospital and 3 therapist in the Child Development Centre. Besides, there are also a Woodwork Instructor, Woodwork Assistant, 3 Occupational Therapy Assistant, a Domestic Helper and a Clerical Staff.
