HISTORY

DENTAL CLINICS
Dentistry in Brunei started in the pre-war era. The dental services started as hospital based in 1950, at the old hospital in the Brunei-Muara district. The service was slowly expanded and by 2006, we have a total of 18 peripheral dental clinics, 1 specialist dental clinic, 2 hospital based dental clinics and 72 school clinics.

DENTAL STAFF
The services started out with 1 dentist, 3 assistants and 2 nurses. By 2006, we have 55 dentists: 7 specialists, 7 senior dental officers and 15 Member of Faculty of Dental Surgery trainees (MFDS). Working alongside them we have 73 dental surgery assistants, and a total of 84 dental nurses both in our dental settings and in our dental health education unit.

DENTAL MOBILE SQUAD
This was started in 1970’s. By 2006, there are 9 portable units throughout the country that travel to schools without a school dental clinic and health centers around the country.

SCHOOL DENTAL SERVICES
Was established in 1958 and manned by two dental nurses from New Zealand. At present, we have 72 school clinics throughout the country serving school children below the age of 16, providing routine dental health treatment, dental health activities to school children, parents, guardians and teachers.

DENTAL FLYING SERVICE
The flying dental service began in the 1980’s and was officially collaborated with the medical flying service in 1988 and still in operation today. Currently, we fly to 8 rural communities twice a month.

WATER FLUORIDATION
This was officiated in December 1987. By 2006, three out of four districts receive
fluoridated water.

DENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION
The Dental Health Education was introduced in the 1980s. The department is headed by a Senior Staff Dental Nurse. Apart from their main role of promoting and preparing material for dental health activities, they played an important role in statistics collection and preparation of the annual budget.
