PAEDODONTIC

Paedodontic provides a comprehensive range of dental services for patients from infancy to adolescence, as well as children with special health care needs. Special emphasis is given to training the child towards becoming a good dental patient with good habits to last into adulthood.

HISTORY
1999 - The service was started by a Paediatric dentist
2004 - 3 monthly rotations by Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery trainees (MFDS)
2005 - A Specialist Paediatric dentist joined the team

THE DENTAL TEAM
1 Specialist Paediatric Dentist
1 Full-time Paediatric Dental Officer
1 Dental Officer on rotation
4 Dental Surgery Assistants
84 Dental Nurses/Therapists

SERVICES PROVIDED
  1. REFERRAL CASES
    • from dental nurses, fellow medical and dental officers
    • for cases such as extractions, swellings, orthodontic opinions, behaviour management, special needs and medically compromised patients.
       
  2. JOINT ORTHO-PAEDO CLINIC
    • runs once a month
    • attended by orthodontist, paediatric dentist and dental team
    • discuss the management and need for interceptive or future orthodontic treatment.
       
  3. TRAUMA MANAGEMENT
    • emergency and follow up treatment
    • referrals to any other speciality either dental or medical as neccesary.
       
  4. CLEFT LIP AND/OR PALATE
    • takes place every Monday morning
    • close partnership and coordination with the Oral Maxillofacial Surgical Clinic, Speech Therapy Clinic, ENT clinic and Orthodontists
    • carry out necessary preventive and/or routine dental treatment.
       
  5. DENTAL TREATMENT UNDER GENERAL ANAESTHESIA
    • theatre cases are carried out every Saturday
    • for extractions and restorative treatment
    • patients treated are those who are pre-/un- cooperative, medically compromised, special needs that are difficult to manage under normal dental clinic settings.


ORAL SURGERY

The main specialized centre is at RIPAS hospital. This department is well equipped for specialized treatment. An appointment will be given for a consultation with the Specialist Dental surgeon. Complex cases such as surgical removal of multiple impacted teeth, surgical removal of ectopic teeth etc may require surgical treatment under general anaesthesia.

Other complex cases which are managed include:
  • surgical removal of retained roots
  • oro-antral fistula closure
  • medically comprised patients requiring minor oral surgery
  • Dento-alveolar fractures
  • cystic and benign lessons of the oral cavity
  • infections arising from the oral cavity
 


IMPLANTOLOGY

Brunei has opened up a regional centre for oral and cranio-facial implants based in Ripas Hospital in 2003.

Stages in acquiring a dental implant:
  1. Referral from Dental Officer
  2. Consultation and examination by dental implantologist
  3. Implant placement at first stage
  4. Normally after 3 months, Implant Superstructure Insertion at second stagey
