INFLUENZA A (H1N1) UPDATE 15 PRESS BRIEFING ON PANDEMIC PHASE ALERT SYSTEM

The Ministry of Health today held a press briefing on Pandemic Phase Alert System. The Press Briefing was presented by Dr. Ahmad Fakhri bin DP Haji Junaidi, Medical Officer, Disease Control Division, Department of Environmental Health Services, Ministry of Health.

The Press Briefing covers the issues and understanding the definitions of the various level of the Pandameic Phase Alert System and Pandemic Waves. Currently the global response alert is at Phase 5. Hence, Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

As of 8.00 am this morning, as reported by the WHO Office for Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Singapore, there are a total of 35 countries which have reported confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) which includes Malaysia

The Ministry of Health would also like this opportunity to remind the public to
take the following precautionary health measures :

- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Stay home when you are sick

- Don’t travel if you are sick

- Keep yourself updated on the situation as advised by the Ministry
  of Health
