Communicable Diseases Surveillance

The communicable disease surveillance system of DCD is based on 3 types of surveillance:

Indicators Surveillance;

Syndromic Surveillance and

Events Surveillance.

        Indicators surveillance is based on the reporting of notifiable diseases. Daily notifications of diseases are received from government and private health centres and hospital in the Brunei-Muara district. Disease notifications in the other districts are received by the District Health Offices which are then further transmitted to DCD.

        Syndromic surveillance involves the collection of relevant information on cluster of syndromes from the government health centers such as influenza-like Illness (ILI). The ILI surveillance system was developed in 2003, it enables formulation of public health measures in the prevention and control of influenza infections by detecting outbreaks early and predicting trends of an outbreaks. This surveillance system utilizes data on the daily trends in the attendance of patients with upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) from sentinel sites at the Bandar Seri Begawan and Seria health centres. Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance is conducted by DCD for poliomyelitis surveillance and support polio-free status in Brunei Darussalam.

        Events surveillance involves monitoring of unusual events of occurrence, including rumours. It provides early warning and alert on emerging infectious diseases and potential disease outbreak. Information is obtained through formal and informal channels and it allows for appropriate investigative actions.
