Laboratory Services
  1. INTRODUCTION
    The Laboratory Services have been providing essential laboratory testing since 1927 and was officially recognised as Department of Laboratory Services on 2nd January 2001. The department covers all government hospital medical laboratories in the country, namely:
  1. Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital laboratory
  2. Suri Seri Begawan (SSB) Hospital laboratory in Kuala Belait
  3. Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah (PMMPMHAMB) Hospital laboratory in Tutong
  4. Pengiran Isteri Hajah Mariam (PIHM) Hospital laboratory in Temburong

The workflow in the laboratories is supported by the Laboratory Information System (LIS), which is linked to all laboratories throughout the four districts; all wards in RIPAS hospital and primary health care clinics in the Brunei-Muara District.


Over the years, the laboratory services have expanded to cover the followings:

  1. Blood Donation
  2. Clinical Chemistry
  3. Cytopathology
  4. Haematology and Blood Transfusion
  5. Histopathology
  6. Immunology
  7. Microbiology
  8. Phlebotomy
  9. Virology

In 1984 the laboratory services moved to its present location at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital and then became known as the Central State Laboratory (Makmal Negara).


On 2nd January 2001 the laboratory services was officially recognised as Department of Laboratory Services under the Director General of Medical Services. The Department of Laboratory Services covers all government hospital laboratories in the country, namely:

  1. Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha ((RIPAS) Hospital Laboratory Services
  2. Suri Seri Begawan (SSB) Hospital Laboratory Services in Kuala Belait

​1970s​The laboratory services were divided into various sections namely Bacteriology, Haematology, Biochemistry and Phlebotomy
​1972​SSB Hospital Laboratory began its operation on 3rd October
​1974​Histology Laboratory was formed with the recruitment of a Specialist Pathologist
​1978​Tutong Hospital Laboratory began its operation
​1979​Laboratory Information System (LIS) started its operation
​1983​Cytology was incorporated to the Histology Laboratory
​1984​ The laboratory services moved from Rumah Sakit Umum to RIPAS Hospital and known as Central State Laboratory (CSL) or Makmal Negara
​1986​PIHM Hospital Laboratory began its operation
​1993​LIS was upgraded
​1997​Tutong Laboratory moved to PMMPMHAMB Hospital
​2001​Laboratory Services officially recognised as a Department on 2nd January
​2001​Virology section was separated from Microbiology Laboratory as an independent laboratory
​2005​Clinical Chemistry and Haematology Laboratory were relocated to their current location
​2006​Immunology section was separated from Microbiology Laboratory as an independent laboratory
​2006​Virology Laboratory was relocated to its current location at Sumbiling Biomedical Research and Training Centre
